spring clean, new home
Sorry for the silence, I know I’ve been a bit quiet for a while – as usual its the volume of freelance work that’s caused this. While its good to be busy, I watched with frustration as 1st April came and went, with everyone doing their little gags, and me missing my opportunity.
I’ve also been busy moving this site to a new server. I’d outgrown my little hovel at 1&1, become frustrated at the lack of decent support, and was being hit for excess bandwidth ever since Firefox 0.8 came out (all I did was the bloody icon!).
After constant poking and pestering by Mr Benjamin, I’m now with the hard working, nothing is too much trouble, chaps at Segment Publishing. I’m in good company here, with Hivelogic, Waferbaby and Antipixel to name but a few. Maniacial Rage has just joined up too! It feels like joining a record label with your favorite artists. Segments part of the deal was smooth and all the time I was dealing with A person (thanks Jeremy!). Its makes such a difference when you’re not dealing with a switchboard. Bless ‘em for uploading my SQL dump for me on a Saturday evening.
The pain in the arse has been 1&1 dragging their heels in giving up control of my domain. They make it very easy to get in, but you can’t leave without giving up your pound of flesh. Then suddenly, the site was removed from their servers before the DNS had propagated, so I’ve been unavailable for a few days. If you sent me an email recently, it would be worth resending to make sure I’ve got it. Anyway, if you’re reading this, all has gone well and the DNS now points to Sydney.
I’ve also taken the opportunity to do some evolving:
- I’ve revised the portfolio area. For those that really want to read about each piece of work, a drop down ‘info’ box will give it to you. The script I’ve used here is modified from Richard Rutters main menu that he uses on Clagnut. It also uses pngs with alpha transparency as the background image. Those that support it will get a drop shadow and a slightly transparent background. Those that don’t just get a green border and plain white background, which is fine.
- the biggest change is that the rest of the site is now 800×600 friendly. I finally found a layout that I liked, and now prefer this to the previous version. One of things that has helped this is the leaf background image on the left. This helps retain the widescreen proportions, while not adding to the actual content width.
- General spring clean throughout. Trimmed a lot of extraneous text, checked some links. Basically, everything but the journal has been updated.
- It took me a while to work out how to get a DIV to align to the bottom of another DIV. Hmm, vertical-align? Doesn’t work with block elements. Finally it dawned on me – “position:absolute; bottom:0;” . Doh.

Hi Jon, I like your improvements, especially the "more info" popups in your portfolio and the smart 800x600 solution with the leaves on the left, very nice! The attention to details is what makes this site rock! :-)Arthur J. Bahadourian said 1690 days ago:
GREAT job Jon,I really enjoy by daily visits.
Always informative, educational and refreshing!

P.S. -- I love the leaves!!

That's soo nice :-)Adam Bramwell said 1690 days ago:
Good to see you breaking the drought with a fresh post Jon!Many a time in the last month your site was unavailable, hopefully that's all over now you're with Segment.
Andrew said 1690 days ago:
So, are you actaully paying full price for your hosting with Segment? I'm also looking to change hosting somewhere but don't want to pay $20 a month for only 50mb.I love the new design, but it was an inconvience seeing that I was trying to look at your site for inspiration while I designed my design site. Oh well, you didn't do what I was looking to see if you did anyways...
Suggestion:
maybe it's just me but I think you need to change the color of green in you side bar now... I could be wrong though

Adam - I wasn't aware that site had been unavailable over last month, but yes, that should be over now.Andrew - I'll say this about hosting: I'm fed up with cheap hosts that give you 2gb of space, 1000 email addresses and couldn't be bothered support. Being with Segment is about dealing with the same person everytime, who bends over backwards to help you out. Its also about decent servers with 99.9% uptime!
Also - I don't quite understand what your problem was. What were hoping I would do?
Andrew said 1690 days ago:
Oh it was nothing big I just thought I'd seen people do something in CSS that was actually able to be done... I knew if it was that you'd have done it...Ryan Sims said 1690 days ago:
Hello Jon, I saw that you are participating in the May 1st Reboot... is this true? Just curious to see what you've got up your sleeves for the next version. Keep up the good work!Kevin said 1690 days ago:
The leafy background is nice. The web has too many straight lines. I'm a fan of anything that breaks it up :)Jon Hicks said 1690 days ago:
Ryan - unfortunately, I've had to back out due to lack of time. The particapants list should've updated and taken me off, but it seems not. Also, everytime I think about a redesign, I keep coming back to this design, with a few tweaks - really irritating!Kevin - thanks, that was what I was trying to acheive. I did try it on all 4 sides, but just the one looked best.

Hmm, I could really do with sorting out a new host as well. I'm happy with my current host in the UK, but their bandwidth charges are a little too expensive for me. However, changing hosts always seems like a bit of a scary thing to me, which is why I haven't done anything about it yet.The segment publishing Standard Package would probably suit me just fine as I get around 6GB traffic a month. At $30 AUD it seems pretty good value. That works out at a mere £12.50 a month which seems pretty good to me.
I've been told by many people that hosting prices in the US are much cheaper than in the UK, but have always steered clear of overseas hosting. It's always nice to be able to ring somebody up if you need to. As such I'd never even have thought about hosting in Oz.
Seems strange that so many well knows sites are hosting over in Oz. If things work out well for you, I may just be joining you.

Andy - I'd really reccommend Segpub. I was between them and Media Temple (who seem to be a trendy logo to have on your site), but with Segpub you really get the personal service. They'll also help you migrate your site, moving my MT database was easy-peasy. I did a fresh installation of MT, but all the entries, templates and settings were brought across with an SQL dump.
I'd always had the UK-only mindset, but the guys are contactable by email and AIM. I get faster service and response than I ever did from a UK host.
Above all, they all use Macs!

it's because we don't sleeeeeeeeep.Paul D said 1690 days ago:
I too am working on a new portfolio site using Movable Type and have been shopping for an MT-friendly host with good service. Segment seems to fit the bill, even though I was looking for something here in Canada. It's so hard to know who has good service these days, and who doesn't, without some kind of human referral.
Like the revamped design, by the way. And it was the Firefox logo that brought me here in the first place. Terrific work!
Jon Hicks said 1689 days ago:
Daniel - I can beleive it. I check Waferbaby to find out if its a sociable hour in Sydney,. It rarely is.Paul - I know what you mean, but my experience of SegPub so far has been great. I've been treated like a king!
Colin D. Devroe said 1689 days ago:
Jon - I am running a nightly of Firefox (04-05-04) I believe. And I can't get your navigation to function at all. Clicking on portfolio does nothing.Might be something with the nightly build, but thought I would point it out nonetheless.

Jon, I am curious as to why you avoided having an option to "view all" in the portfolio? Just wondering.Josh said 1687 days ago:
Hey Jon, I love the changes! It's nice to see your site evolve over this past year. I especially like the portfolio's "info" pop-up. Nice work. -- JoshPaul Michael Smith said 1685 days ago:
I am currently with 1 & 1 and have been for a few years now. They have been great for me but a couple of things annoy me about them and I am starting to out grow the things they currently have on offer.I plan to move to another host when I leave University and I can get some decent dosh together. A friend of mine has a box in houston that he runs completly by him self and he uses Joker for his DNS which he says is by far the best.
