Jon, you must be mighty proud to see your little Red Panda on that masthead. Hows about doing a new version with the little fella strangling the IE logo. Just for a laugh…

Good on you SMH!

I noticed that today when I was reading the paper and i thought: “gee, this is a pretty progressive article for a newspaper, Mozilla must be going mainstream”

As much as I love FireFox (and despise IE), sadly Open Source stuff just won’t take off like us web-savvy folk think or want it to.

FireFox is great for us – we love the tabbed browsing, the popup blocker and the web designer tools, not to mention the logo ;). But my mother could care less, and she’s the other 96% of people who use IE.

Sweetness! That’s really awesome. Broader press coverage means more users—certain segments only, for now—will switch.

Interesting point from Jeff but there is the other side to that coin. If I go and put FireFox on my Mum’s PC and hide IE as best I can, she’ll just use it and not care. Same goes for smaller clients with maybe one or two machines and no IT department.

Those of us who know better need to encourage those who don’t. We can change the worlds browsing habits, one client at a time!

I used to think like Jeff, but not anymore. The Firefox team are targeting the browser at Joe Public first, and web chaps like us second. I think they’re starting to turn the tide. Maybe we won’t make 96%, but if we can make 30% it would make a difference.

Especially with the recent security scares in IE, more ‘normal users’ are switching over…

Don’t forget about Uncle Bill. Gates that is. As long as Microsoft rules the desktop, it will be difficult to make a significant dent. And no matter how many court rulings go against MS, the “IEness” is so entrenched into XP that it’s difficult for the average Joe User to escape. It’s like crab grass on your lawn—tough to get rid off.

FireFox is great, and I hope it makes to the people, but it will take some clever strategy to make a significant difference.

I don’t know if anyone has seen this yet, but I found it interesting that even a guy that works for Slate (which Microsoft owns) wrote an article saying to switch to Mozilla’s Firefox.

It is one of the great scandals of the modern era that Microsoft’s unethical and illegal behaviour has been rewarded rather than punished.

Please. Of course it had nothing to do with IE being a far superior browser than Navigator.

I wonder why every article that promotes Firefox has to make an inane statement abt the Browser War. Why can’t they just concentrate on the superiority of Firefox over IE6? As if its not enough that Firefox provides a better web experience, that we have to make emotional and unjustified claims abt IE and Microsoft’s past behavior. Firefox should be rated on its unique and multiple merits, not the wrongs of others.

It seems to work and look fine in my version of Firefox.

If you look under the hood you’ll see that the site is using XHTML and CSS for layout. There’s a bit of dodgy invalid code in there, but it looks like it’s mainly because of ads.

I reckon that’s quite impressive for such a highly trafficked and updated site with so many authors.

Jeff- I was in the same baot as you, trying to sell my mother on why Firefox is better and why she should have to learn another piece of software. I tried selling it to her and it didn’t work. Until, I came to the security issues.

Let’s face it, most people just don’t care about tabbed browsing if they are so used to one thing, but almost everyone buys stuff online. And with that latest security dump that recorded key strokes and stole passwords, it has become too dangerous to use. There is a great article on WASP about this in the recent posts. IE is just to dangerous to use. Mozilla has the security and that sold my mom on it in an instant.

BTW Jon, welcome back. Good to hear that you had a great vacation.

@Daniel (#18)
I agree, I think Pete Ottery and his crew did a magnificent job with the conversion. They also did The Age and other associated Fairfax sites

Some details are available at the SMH redesign page and Pete gave a presentation to a Sydney meeting of the Web Standards Group
Disclaimer: I call him ‘Pete’ as if I know him, but I don’t. Oh, and I’m a member of aforementioned group (although not one of those crazy fools who choose to live in Sydney)

To get slightly more back on topic: although I advocate Firefox wherever possible, I won’t be installing it on clients’ computers myself until version 1.0. My clients will simply not believe that software which hasn’t even completed a full version could be better than IE 6. After all, IE is at version 6! Wowee…
