A quick note on adverts

You may have noticed something new lurking in the sidebar, and like Ryan, I feel the need to explain myself. I’ve always resisted ads such as google’s, I’m not keen on how they look or the idea of making money from site visitors. The exception to this was when Dooce mentioned eating Leta with barbecue sauce, and her google ads made suggestions of where to get that sauce.

So, I’m experimenting with the iTunes affiliate scheme. The advantages here are:

  • You get to choose the advert you display
  • They’re suprisingly well designed for a link scheme
  • Most importantly, I see it as being a way to promote an artist that I’m excited about. If it does make a few pennies then they’ll go somewhere other my pocket, but I don’t really see that happening.

I hope that’s OK!

Ads? What ads?

Oh, that ad!

/me enables AdBlock.

Jon, I would only feel threatened by the ads if your site was built around selling me (and your other readers) to the advertisers. Obviously, that’s not the case; you’re still nonprofit as far as your blog is concerned. :)

Interpol is pretty cool. Thank you for the recommendation.

“Thank you for the recommendation.”

Great – thats the reaction I hoped for!

Gah. Another one sells out. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Subtle, well designed and considered, and for a good purpose.

No complaints here.

I don’t mind the ads at all. Especially since I barely ever come to the actual website (NewsFire rules!!!!). Interpol isn’t my cup of tea but I think the little graphic in the sidebar looks pretty cool.

Nothing particular against ads except that I use AdBlock ;). If there should be ads, they should be useable by me. That means google ads and ads to music or movies. Guess you’ve struck gold.

Too bad that the ad you use link to a document I do not support here. Which gives me a new tab in Firefox with a ‘itms is not a registered protocol’ and leaves the tab empty. Maybe you’d add some sort of pointer to explain you need iTunes or iPod or whatever the requirements are (since I do not know).

ads? the only thing that i can see related to what you were talking about is the playlist thingy on the right…

or am i looking in completely the wrong place altogether?

That’ll be your adblocking software working then!

I like the ad because it is unobtrusive and that you got to pick the artist you were going to endorse. I might have to check into that program myself.

Great to see you flagging up Interpol, Jon (you still enjoying The Specialist?), but the link takes me to a search page asking me if I was actually looking for “Internal”. Is ita US store release only?
#14

Jon Hicks said 1430 days ago:

Colly – Yeah, I’m afraid its US only at the moment, but there is supposed to be a UK version in a few months.

“Internal” indeed. iTunes MS UK needs a kick up the arse.

They’re playing here in Nottm on 19th December – we’re making that our company Xmas doo. Anyone else is welcome – but get a ticket!

And Jon – at least it wasn’t “Eternal”!

Despite Interpol’s large nut-blowing quotient, it is a nice design that sits unobstrusively in your existing design. That’s the way do it if you’re gonna do it at all. Nice work.

‘G’ oogle has a capital ‘g’

Please give the team proper credit for delivering the best site ever to grace the web – btw – you’ll note the distinct LACK of ads og G’s homepage

Compare that add count to Yahoo!, MSN or Alta-WhatsItsName and consider the slippery slope you stand before
