BBC Radio in MediaCentral

I’ve been playing with MediaCentral a lot recently, as it keeps adding more and more functionality that impresses me. While not perfect (This MacWorld review expresses my concerns) its a good looking, snappy FrontRow alternative, with a lot of potential.

The recent 2.3.1 release brings support for .ram files, which finally means that I can listen to BBC Radio in MediaCentral. All you need is a .ram file for each station, and to make life easy, you can download my set of BBC Radio Streams. Assuming you have Realplayer, all you need to do is place it’s contents in your /My MediaCentral/My Radio/ folder, and you’re away.

From where did you acquire your streams list, Jon? Dave.org.uk used to be a good source, until the BBC had a quiet word.

I’ve managed to get rtsp urls by using the BBC player, then turning my Airport off, then noting the url in the network error message. All this so I can record shows to mp3 for iPod listening.

Tim, I got the directly from the BBC site! When you go to listen live, there is an option to listen in Real Player. If you alt-click to download, you get the .ram file. Then I just renamed then all so that the name showed up correctly.

Ah. Easy peasy then! I vaguely remember the BBC hiding the URLs for certain shows when they upgraded the in-browser player. Maybe they’ve reinstated them.

I’m a Sonos user – an audio streaming system which doesn’t support .RAM for it’s radio stations. Just recently someone found a way to get alternative streams for BBC. I’m submitting it here in case someone Googling is after the info:

They’re WMV streams I think. Still, it’s an alternative for those that need it.
