Google Reader Theme 1.1

Because of some updated in Google Reader over the last few weeks, the theme has started to deteriorate a bit. Therefore I present:

v1.1 The “Oh crap, Google keep changing their markup!’ release

  • Added Trends Icon
  • Added padding and header bars to the Home and Trends screens so that they don’t look quite so bad
  • Fixed display problems on highlighted feed border, feed folders, subscription icons and other bits
  • Update – missing ‘mark all as read’ is back, please re-download.

The next release will probably be called the “Bloody hell, I’m fed up of all those nested tables” release…

I’ve been loving this theme in Firefox for a while now, and decided to give it a go in Camino. Following the directions, I’ve placed greader.css and an updated userContent.css in both /Library/Application Support/Camino/chrome/ and ~/Library/Application Support/Camino/chrome/ (each location seperately, and then together at the same time), and Camino ignores the change in all cases.

Thanks! This was the first I had heard of this theme and was really impressed. Keep up the good work.

The “Mark All As Read” option has been removed since I upgraded, was the option removed?

Michael Bester said 270 days ago:

Thanks for this update, Jon – this is much appreciated and makes using Google Reader a pleasure.

Hey I have never been able to get SafariStand to modify the site with your CSS. Any idea why? Thanks

#8

J. Bradford said 270 days ago:

Yep, I have the same problem as Daniel. no more “mark all as read”. Great update, anyway!

#9

Kevin Finlayson said 270 days ago:

@Stephen SafariStand for Safari 3 beta has the site alteration disabled. Hopefully the developer will fix this soon.

Great work Jon!

Love the theme!! How often does Google update the markup nowadays??

Thank you! Greader is where I am all day long in Windoze, and this is a huge improvement.

Thanks for the update!! I was wondering why the individual feed icons changed. Glad to see they’re fixed now.

The only issue I see is that the “mark all as read” text is gone since I upgraded. Is there a fix for this?

I miss the mark all as read, but otherwise I’m loving it!

Wes said 270 days ago:

Simply beautiful. Any chance of a GMail theme along the same lines?

#17

Jon Hicks said 270 days ago:

Sorry about the missing ‘mark all as read’ – I’d removed it to debug a problem, and didn’t put it back! If you all re-download it, it should be back.

@Brett – I can’t think why, I use the theme in Camino just fine. Things to check:

* Is the @import rule at the top of the userContent.css file? * Can you put other rules in the userContent.css file to check that its being imported? * Are you running an early version of Camino (I know it’s unlikely!)

If not, email me and we’ll sort this out!

#18

Brett Stimmerman said 270 days ago:

Thanks Jon. It turns out Camino requires a trailing semi-colon on the @import rule. I missed it the first time ‘round.

“Mark all as read” is showing up for me, but “Refresh” has disappeared (the one above my items, not below my feed list). Firefox 2.0.0.3, Stylish

#23

Jon Hicks said 269 days ago:

The refresh is bottom left!

#24

Matt Eason said 269 days ago:

That only refreshes the feed list doesn’t it? I’m talking about the one in #viewer-refresh which refreshes the reading list and used to be next to “Mark all as read” – you’ve hidden it in “anything to hide sir?”. I don’t think the two of them do the same thing, but I may be missing something

userstyles.org seems to be down every time I try and check it. Is there any way you can host a copy of the stylish file for this theme here on hickdesign?

Chris said 269 days ago:

I still dont understand how so many folks use Google Reader given that it has no search capability whatsoever. I couldnt do it.

Geoff O said 269 days ago:

Great look and feel. I must have missed the 1.0 since I recently started using Google Reader. This looks much better and is easier on my eyes. Can’t wait for the “Bloody hell, I’m fed up of all those nested tables” release.

Peter said 267 days ago:

Nice work, and surely remarkable. But I noticed one flaw: When using that theme in Opera it is applied to everything from google.com . This changes my often used iGoogle page as well. Especially the fact that one cannot distinguish unread and read mail in the Gmail-gadget (http://www.google.com/ig/directory?hl=en&url=builtin_gmail.xml) kept me from using your theme permanently. Is there any potential fix?

#31

Chiller said 267 days ago:

Pete,

That is because this CSS file applies to the google.com website. Reader is a subdirectory so it stands to reason that other subdirectories would inherit some of the common properties. Jon might be able to explain it better though.

Dale said 267 days ago:

There is no a white “bar”/line appearing underneath the Trends, above the feeds list.

#33

Dale said 267 days ago:

^^ That should have read “now a white bar”

Hi Mr Hicks! Lovely theme, and you’ve made me most proud of myself for being able to work Stylish and the theme into my browser :-)

I have one remark: the ‘add’ button in the add subscription panel is now black on dark, translucent gray, which made me miss it (I’m on Firefox 2/Win, by the way). Perhaps you could look into this? Thanks!

Nice software!! very interesting Google Reader Theme 1.1

Ted said 264 days ago:

Jon – Love the theme, but Matt is correct, you have the “refresh” link on the left for the feeds, but the refresh link on the top right for the view isn’t there. This refresh handles refreshing the view of feeds, so you can see the updated feeds in list or expanded view.
