Gravatars will be OK!

As you may have noticed, gravatar.com has been down for a few days, but have no fear. I had an email from Tom Werner this morning which explains everything:

“I left for vacation to China on the 11th, and it seems I forgot to renew the gravatar.com domain before I left. Now I have the rude awakening here in Hangzhou that gravatars have been down since the 15th. Curse my timing! I am renewing the domain right now but it might take a little while to go through and there might be other problems I don’t forsee. Could you to make a little note on your weblog informing the peoples of this misfortune? Tell them I still care!!!!”

Instead of gravatar.com you can use the IP adress http://64.124.231.223/.

Search for the lines

$grav_base_url = “http://www.gravatar.com/avatar.php?gravatar_id=”.md5($email).$rating;
$grav_url = “http://www.gravatar.com/avatar.php?gravatar_id=”.md5($email).$rating.$size.$border;

in the glx_gravatar plugin and replace them with the following lines:

$grav_base_url = “http://64.124.231.223/avatar.php?gravatar_id=”.md5($email).$rating;
$grav_url = “http://64.124.231.223/avatar.php?gravatar_id=”.md5($email).$rating.$size.$border;

So gravatars will work again :)

You can do the same with the Movable Type Gravatar plug-in – works perfectly.

Good to hear it was just an oversight and not a shutdown.

Timmargh – Yes, the MT Gravatar plugin works perfectly, but only when gravatar.com is up. Since it went down it doesn’t even display my “alternate” image I specified. I just had to endure it saying “gravatar” next to everybody’s name until it was fixed.

But man, I’m glad they fixed that.

Good news to hear Tom’s okay .. that was a weird week or so :)

I know from experience though, how difficult getting decent internet can be in China – especially Hangzhou.

Hm, mabe that’s why I’ve been having trouble getting my Gravatar rated recently. It’s been a few weeks. Hope someone will get my icon out of pending status soon.

Thanks so much for turning me on to gravatars, i am currently redesigning my main website to make it standards compliant, and i will be sure to include gravatars in commenting.
