Gravatars will be OK!
As you may have noticed, gravatar.com has been down for a few days, but have no fear. I had an email from Tom Werner this morning which explains everything:
“I left for vacation to China on the 11th, and it seems I forgot to renew the gravatar.com domain before I left. Now I have the rude awakening here in Hangzhou that gravatars have been down since the 15th. Curse my timing! I am renewing the domain right now but it might take a little while to go through and there might be other problems I don’t forsee. Could you to make a little note on your weblog informing the peoples of this misfortune? Tell them I still care!!!!”
Try and enjoy your holiday Tom!

Instead of gravatar.com you can use the IP adress http://64.124.231.223/.Search for the lines
$grav_base_url = “http://www.gravatar.com/avatar.php?gravatar_id=”.md5($email).$rating;
$grav_url = “http://www.gravatar.com/avatar.php?gravatar_id=”.md5($email).$rating.$size.$border;
in the glx_gravatar plugin and replace them with the following lines:
$grav_base_url = “http://64.124.231.223/avatar.php?gravatar_id=”.md5($email).$rating;
$grav_url = “http://64.124.231.223/avatar.php?gravatar_id=”.md5($email).$rating.$size.$border;
So gravatars will work again :)

You can do the same with the Movable Type Gravatar plug-in – works perfectly.Good to hear it was just an oversight and not a shutdown.

Timmargh – Yes, the MT Gravatar plugin works perfectly, but only when gravatar.com is up. Since it went down it doesn’t even display my “alternate” image I specified. I just had to endure it saying “gravatar” next to everybody’s name until it was fixed.But man, I’m glad they fixed that.

Good news to hear Tom’s okay .. that was a weird week or so :)I know from experience though, how difficult getting decent internet can be in China – especially Hangzhou.

Hm, mabe that’s why I’ve been having trouble getting my Gravatar rated recently. It’s been a few weeks. Hope someone will get my icon out of pending status soon.Nat said 1101 days ago:

I was glad that Gravatars.com came back online. It went down just after I submitted my photograph …Markus said 1097 days ago:
phew! What would the comment function be without the opportunity to show your pale face and squinting red eyes? =)ZeFroG said 1089 days ago:
