Happy old man

To balance the curmudgeonly talk of the last two posts, here are a few things I’m really happy about:

Kilts! I wore a kilt for the first time last weekend, and I am smitten. For a start if you have a rather more portly frame (such as myself) its quite forgiving. Also, while it was a freezing weekend, I can confirm that underneath all that tartan, there is a zone of warmth. AND, you get to put a dagger (Skean Dubh, sorry) in your sock. AND you get some where to put your camera at last (in the Sporran of course).

I did the whole traditional regalia, except for keeping my pants on. There are no photos sadly.

AppZapper – Yes, to uninstall an app in OS X you can just drag it to the bin, but there are still other files associated with it – preferences, Application Support files and caches. Looking through my Library folder its littered with the remnants of apps that I’ve tried out and dumped, and this mess annoys me. One technique is to do a search using the app name, but this can still miss some files. Now I just drag the app to AppZapper and ‘ZZZZap!’ The action of zapping is childishly pleasing one! For someone like me who is always trying out new stuff, this is a boon.

Salling Clicker – Although I’ve had this for a while, its only now with the Mac Mini as (primarily) a jukebox, that this has really seen some use. Beauty!

Segpub – I don’t get paid to pimp Segpub, or receive any referral fees, but I do get excellent service, uptime and support. Thanks for everything you do Jeremy, thou truly are a Creative Bastard.

A Kilt? Wow. I’ve worn a Sarong before to go to church in Fiji and I certainly didn’t feel any zone of warmth there – damn breezy down there.

So, will be seeing the kilt in Austin?

Salling Clicker’s great, I use it for the same thing with my iMac although bluetooth range is a bit of an issue with my phone – I think I need to get myself a new one.

John Gruber has a good point about AppZapper and the like:

”... if you’re the sort of obsessive neatnik who cares about cleaning up such things, you know where to look. That’s why it’s important for apps to store their preferences, caches, and application support files in the standard Library sub-folders. (It’s also why I have never seen the need for “uninstaller” utilities …)”

But, as he says, no one has any business putting anything anywhere else – and particularly not silently.

A kilt, that’s nothing I wear my Missus’ knickers on a regular basis…

[Tumbleweed rolls bye]

Think I am going to try Segpub too, they sound v.good.

Real men wear unbifurcated clothing. So I won’t be the only one in a kilt at SXSW?

God I love Salling Clicker. Since setting up my Mac to wake me up with music in the mornings, having Salling available to change the track from bed is altogether fab. Lazy, but fab. Very, very lazy.

As for the kilt: You lie, there are photos .

Dammit, I’ve been looking for an excuse to wear a kilt for ages. Closest I came a new years’ party as Scary Spice . Very scary indeed. What was your excuse?

No idea about the Mac apps , gosh darn it (anybody feeling generous? ;) but I can heartily agree with the Segpub pimpin’. A damn fine company (and they’re in my favourite place in the whole wide world – Sydney).

Oh this makes me happy! Kilts are one of life’s greatest pleasures.

My brother, who (as I am) is Canadian, secured himself a kilt just over a year ago. My sister flew to Edinburgh and got to see it be made. He now wears it to as many social functions as possible (and he will confirm the “zone of warmth” as well as the very handy use of the sporan).

Well kudos on the kilt! You must don it again and take pictures.

I can’t wait to get myself a kilt. They’re pretty expensive, though.

I’m totally with you on kilts. I wore one in a friend’s wedding several years ago and felt more manly than I had in years.

Just to nitpick the preferred spelling is “Sgian Dubh”.

Apparently wearing the full Prince Charlie getup is the only legal way to carry a knife in Britain.

I’m guessing it would be wishful thinking to see these posted on Flickr ;)

So basically, you’re all just a bunch of men wearing skirts then?

Weirdos, the lot of you :-p

Kilts are great fun. Also very practical – no messing about with flies or zips (or pants) when you need a wee – whoosh! up goes the kilt and away you go! Which tartan did you wear?

I think it was “McDonald of the Argyle”

AppZapper, eh. I was one of the lucky 10,000 to get both this app and menuet for free during the giveaway. Menuet worked at everything but getting album art from the iTMS, which is what I wanted it for. So I tried to uninstall is using AppZapper and it still left files all over the place. I must have done something wrong. Anyhoo, someone can have my license to both programs if they wish. Send me an email.

I’ve fallen in love with AppZapper too, luckily I won a licence when MacGrab was on.

Good on you for having the wherewithall to try the kilt. My Wife finally convinced me to give it a try last year. I didn’t go with the traditional variety but got myself a Utilikilt. It was with a certain amount of trepidation that I first wore it to go out to a bar in Wisconsin’s winter cold. It was a revelation, and I wear it at every possible opportunity these days. Pants? Try it without. They do nothing for warmth and make it less comfortable. Peoples reactions have been interesting but even the dumbest and most red-necked have been pretty positive. A couple of locals have even ordered their own. Keep wearing them Jon, just avoid mirrored floors!
