Omniweb theme 1.2

Since last weeks update, I’ve not only refined the Safari style buttons, but the iTunes style buttons too. These look miles better, so if you’re using the round buttons, please re-download and install.

iTunes style buttons

This will be the last update to the Omniweb theme for a while, but I will be updating my Camino theme with these new icons soonish.

Brilliant icon set, as usual, Jon. Thanks for posting it. With this in place, I’m now going to test out using Omniweb 5.5 full-time and see how it compares with Safari. (Brilliant so far.)

Just wish they would change their bookmark icons (or remove them) for those sites I add to my Favorites Bar—a bit too much visual info going on for my tastes. I prefer Safari’s text-only rendition, which isn’t as distracting.

I’m not an OmniWeb user, but that theme looks ultra sexy. If only the browser were free, but I just couldn’t bring myself to pay for something that I’d probably use sparingly behind Firefox.

Do you have other screenshots? I’d love to see the whole thing at some point.

Any chance this will make it as an Opera theme? I.e. is porting it to other browsers allowed?

Great stuff Jon; thanks for this. I just started my trial of Omniweb today, and love their approach on tabs. Your theme adds a lot to the feel of the browser and is simply delicious.

One rudimentary question though – how do I unify the appearance of the title bar and the toolbar as it appears in your screenshot? Mine has a line in between the two in Tiger…

Just out of curiosity, how many people use icons in their browser UI. When an application that gives me a choice – icon, text, or icon+text – I’ll always choose text. Don’t icons just cluter the screen with uselessness that’s better served with more compact text?

In the screnshot above, I’m guessing the first icon is for an address book? or maybe the bookmark menu? I have no idea what the second one is for…some sore of calendar/clock? (not sure why a browser needs a calendar or a clock). If those where text, there’d be no question.

That said, the icons above look pretty.

@ Jeroen – No plans for an Opera port of theme I’m afraid, but if you fancy a go, and give proper credit, feel free to make one!

@ Nick – Sounds like you’re using 5.1.3. You need to use the 5.5 beta. See the last Omniweb post for more info.

@ Dave – it’s just personal choice. If you have the location and search bar there, icons don’t take up much extra space. A lot of the time I browse with no toolbar at all, just using keyboard shortcuts for everything.

Just a thought, maybe for History we should use an ancient scroll instead of a clock? ;o)

Nick said 834 days ago:

Cheers Jon – you were right. Updated to 5.5, and man is it zippy! I think I’ve fallen in love, and your make-up artistry is partly to blame. Let me know what you’d like from your delicious list – I’d like to say thanks properly.

As for your history icons, the clock/calendar action duo makes sense to me – it’s certainly more intuitive than whatever weird alternatives there are. (Inter-dimensional time-travelling toaster icons anyone?)

Jon Hicks said 834 days ago:

Thats very kind Nick, but there’s really no need. If you like using the theme, then the warm fuzzy glow I get from that is more than enough! :D

Nick said 834 days ago:

Ha! Thanks again, Jon. If only we could all get by on warm fuzzy glowing alone…

Now all I need is Inquisitor for OmniWeb and I can rest in peace!

Anthony Baker said 834 days ago:

Ah… for those who are interested, here’s a response from David on the fate of Inquisitor for Omniweb.

I posted a query on the subject at his development weblog this morning and got the following:

“There is no chance that OmniWeb will get Inquisitor. At this point, I’m pretty sure that even Camino was a waste of time.”

David as direct as ever!

Thanks for updating this theme Jon, Omniweb 5.5 is the bee’s knees but the original icons are so odd.

Aw man, so sad about no inquisitor love. Dave is funny.

Thanks for the OW icons. I just installed the latest sneak peak it looks fantastic with your new ones. Good work! Dangit. I’m really going to have to buy OW now.

Does anybody know how to remove the bookmark folder icons to get the bookmark bar looking cleaner? I deleted the OWBookmarksFolder.png and it looks a bit better, but it would be nice if there was a way to do that through the UI to clean up the spacing now.

Jon Hicks said 824 days ago:

@ Brian – Not at the moment, and if you delete the bookmark folder image, then it goes from the bookmark manager (and I think the history menus too). Its definitely a UI improvement I’d love to to see! In the meantime, I tend to browser with that bar hidden, accessing bookmarks via quicksilver or the hot keys – Apple 1, Apple 2 etc.
