Red Channel

When I use Photoshop, I want apple-1 to show the file at 100% (or ‘actual pixels’), just like every other adobe application I use. I don’t want to look at the red channel.
Photoshop CS has a nifty feature allowing you to customise its keyboard shortcuts, but guess which command isn’t listed?!
I beg of you, has anyone found a way around this?

No, I don’t believe there’s any way. Though you can change the shortcut keys. very handy so you can then set them to what they should be, instead of Adobe’s messed up arrangement (I hate the fact I had to manually assign cmnd+z to undo and cmnd+shift+z to redo) but you can’t change the shortcuts for the channels!I wish Adobe would get their act together and fix their applications (I want to default to proof colors, not have to set it manually every time I open a document)

You could use Apple-Option-0 (that’s zero) to view at actual size. I was also going to suggest using the System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts feature but that doesn’t appear to work with Photoshop…ydnar said 1403 days ago:
Adobe’s felt the wrath of its users when they’ve changed Photoshop’s keyboard shortcuts before. Given the number of Photoshop users to OSX users, and the frequency of change of OSX keyboard mnemonics to Photoshop’s, I think you’d find the former in Adobe’s category, and the latter in Apple’s. Can you expect all applications to conform to Apple’s hijacking of the keyboard to suit their current whims?Cmd-H is hide edges, for instance. Something Photoshop users take for granted, and I’d wager use 100x more often than Hide Application.

Bam! MenuMaster from Unsanity can take care of this, easy. (This is one of those things that has always bothered me but I’ve never thought to address it before. Thanks Jon!)Jon Hicks said 1403 days ago:
Ydnar – Illustrator and InDesign (even Fireworks) use cmnd-1. I expect Adobe to conform to Adobe!Shaun – yeah I know, thats what I use when I remember!

It’s not just me then! :)ydnar said 1403 days ago:
@5: Perhaps, but Illustrator doesn’t have color channels, which are arguably (pre-layers anyway) Photoshop’s greatest feature. Given the number of methods to zoom (Cmd +/-, Cmd-(Opt-)Space, mouse wheel) already, it’s sort of a judgement call.Though, Photoshop’s wheel zoom is silly…

Yay – just tried the demo and it works!!Thank you! Thats easily worth $10 to me!

The bigger question is why channels have their own command key shortcuts anyway. Does anyone still really even use ChOPs? ChOPs were a lot more useful back in the Photoshop 2 and 3 days when layers and adjustment layers weren’t as prevalent as they are now. I mean, I can understand why people still use channels at all, but enough to warrant a prime keyboard command like that? I bet only about 1% of Photoshop users even use channels on a daily basis.ydnar said 1403 days ago:
Non-print, non-web work, particularly 3D, animation and game development. Explicit channel manipulation is key for creating texturemaps.Peter Parkes said 1403 days ago:
For me, Cmd-H is quite definitely ‘Hide Application’. And yes, Cmd-1 is definitely not ‘confuse me immensely for 30 seconds while I figure out what I pressed’.The question remains as to why the damn thing isn’t in the customisation list – an easy way to keep everyone happy, by all accounts.

Bwahahaha… can i have that skull in a t-shirt?Olly said 1403 days ago:
Heh, nice skull. The whole Adobe not conforming to Adobe is absolutely rampant throughout their software, and it really annoys me.
Might have to go and have a rant elsewhere…

Sweet, glad to help. MenuMaster comes in handy for a number of things. I use Safari as my default browser-love that spell checking in web forms-with the debug menu enabled you can create shortcuts to open the current page in another browser. I use Apple + Option + F for FireFox and Apple + Option + I for Internet Explorer. Only drawback is that since the “Open Page with” menu is generated from available browsers the first time you access it, the keyboard shortcuts aren’t registered if you don’t use the menu first. But I keep Safari open all day long so it’s not too big a nuisance.Ethan said 1403 days ago:
I have to say that “Edit” > “Keyboard Shortcuts…” almost justifies the price of upgrading to CS in itself; those damned channel shortcuts were the first thing I remapped.bradyj said 1403 days ago:
For Prepress the channel shortcut keys are also useful on a daily basis—when you’re outputing color perfect separations (especially if you go direct to screen, not to film like the old days) it’s very useful to swap through channels to gauge saturation and the like… especially when working with skin tones.shawn said 1403 days ago:
My most major annoyance with keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop (in osx) is that I can’t use “cmd ~” to switch between windows within photoshop. As far as I have found there isn’t a way to change it, since that command isn’t part of a menu.

The truth? When I drove the decisions to consolidate the keyboard shortcuts before cusom shortcuts were an option, there were a few shortucts that had to be taken off the table due to “pain” issues. That is, changing them would upset exisiting users to the degree it wasn’t worth the consistency across apps. For Photoshop, these shortcuts were Deselect and the Channel shortcuts. For Illustrator, it was Paste in Front. for InDesign, it was the Place command. There were a few others as well but those were the most heated ones that we argued over.
Remember, the main thrusst of the consolidated keyboard shortcuts across the apps was done back in 1997. Back then, each product had a loyal user base that did not cut across th suite yet.
Now that the apps have customizable keyboard shortcuts, it makes it easier to make a consistent set across the apps while also allowing people to keep their favorite legacy shotcut as is.
Hope that answers your question.

I just had to learn myself FileMaker to build a content management system for my design group. You want to talk about learning new keyboard shortcuts? command+R for group? Okay…Long ago I decided not ask questions and just bite the bullet. I’ve actually found it very easy to memorize keyboard shortcuts from application to application. You’d be surprised at the amount of things your mind can remember when let go of logic.
It’s option+command+0 for actual pixels in Photoshop
Luke, let go…

Umm what’s wrong with double clicking the hand tool?stuart said 1401 days ago:
Oops I meant the zoom tool?Olly Hodgson said 1400 days ago:
Stuart – whats wrong is that it requires that you click. Those of us that use PS all the time tend to get used to using the keyboard shortcuts whenever we can. Its just easier :o)By the way, I had my rant and got over it .

That’s bizarre – I just left a post exactly about this in Adobe’s (ugly, difficult to use) forums. Very frustrating that you can change most Keyboard Shortcuts, but not this.Jon Hicks said 1400 days ago:
