Richard Hawley - Coles Corner

Richard Hawley

Last August, I was in a pub near Lindisfarne (The Lindisfarne Inn no less) when Richard Hawley and two members of his band came in for a drink. At that time, I had never seen a photo of him, and had only downloaded a few tracks from 3hive. All I knew was that he looked very cool, and that I kicked myself a few weeks later when I saw him perform on Jonathan Ross and realised it was him.

It became the catalyst for discovering his wonderful music. Echoes of Scott Walker, Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash often make his songs seem suited to late nights and rain soaked streets, much like this title track from his previous album Coles Corner. I’m guessing not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s most definitely mine!

Download Richard Hawley – Coles Corner. In addition to the tracks available from 3hive, there are more at Last.fm.

Coles Corner has become a bit of an afternoon favourite in the studio during the past 12 months. The mood of the album seems to suit that time of day!

I saw Richard Hawley live in a small wine bar in East London about 6 years ago. It was great – my flatmate and I were sat on a small round table at the front, so close to the ‘stage’ that Richard put his pint and setlist on the other side of our table! I’ve never had such an intimate gig! Half of Pulp were hanging out at the bar (he plays/played live with them), too. Also, I was a massive Longpigs fan (his old band), back in the day. Mobile Home is a much underrated album.

I saw Richard Hawley in New York at the Bowery Ballroom late last fall, and it stands as one of the best shows I’ve seen. If you get a chance to see him live, you must go.

Wow, thanks Jon – never heard of him before and I’ve already bought Coles Corner from the iTMS. That title track is a stunner.

I’ve never heard of him mate, but it’s a relaxing classy tune. Very dreamy.

Listening to this at 4am doesn’t help my eyes abit though.

Cheers.

Nice — sounds like a lost Tindersticks single.
