Sheesh, Jon: how big’s your iPod? That’s a lot of music!Chris Vincent said 1551 days ago:
“Would you like iTunes to choose a selection of songs to copy to this iPod?”Interesting… I haven’t filled my iPod up yet, but I always wondered what iTunes would say when I did. How does iTunes choose the songs for you?
Jon Hicks said 1551 days ago:
It’s a mere 15gb. Although it didn’t feel ‘mere’ yesterday…I didn’t let it choose for me, although I should’ve just to see what it chose. I thought it was quite presumptuous of it!
Geoff Aladro said 1551 days ago:
I think iTunes just chooses all the songs in your playlists, songs you have played at least once, ones with higher ratings, and then whatever else will fit, or that’s what I gathered when I let it choose which songs to put on.Chris Vincent said 1551 days ago:

That gave me a good laugh, thanks. :)

Classic! I haven’t latched onto the iPod phenomenon just yet – the price is quite steep here in NZ, especially when you see those ‘free iPod’ deals for people in the US sigh.Benjamin said 1551 days ago:
I second Rachel. iPods in Canada-all Apple products for that matter-are rather expensive.Americans are so lucky!

Mmm, 40GB iPod, 27 GB remaining… now if only it would understand more music formats…Marko said 1551 days ago:
Yes, and here in Croatia, there was joint announcement from Renault and Apple today. They start selling Renault Clio iMusic, which is actually plain Clio, but they are shipping 20GB iPod with it. Apple also announced the price for 20GB model—converted it will cost around $500. What a robbery!Dave M. said 1551 days ago:
Sheesh, I have a 40GB iPod, and I have just over 500MB free at this point. I’m starting to think about setting up a playlist to update with since I’ll have the thing filled by the end of the year.I actually have around 3GB free, but I have a bunch of audio books on it right now. I’ll be removing them as I finish them, but still…

Benjamin, maybe it’s just me, but prices for the iPod seem to have come down a bit in Canada. The 20GB is $404 Cdn before the $25 levy (I$!% the Copyright Board of Canada*). That pretty much matches the US price exactly. It’s really the levy and sales taxes that are killer. That reminds me, does anyone know if an iPod shipped from the States (say, Oregon) will accrue fees at the border?
*A friend of mine keeps asking me why Apple doesn’t just ship iPods with a song on them to avoid the levy. Anyone know the answer?

That is quite the feat john! Is that 128kbs or 192 mostly? Or even higher perhaps?John Zeratsky said 1550 days ago:
Darn. I’ve never had an iPod big enough to hold all of my music. The first was an original 5GB—now I have 15GB. An upgrade to 40 may be in my future.the wife @ work said 1550 days ago:

They start selling Renault Clio iMusicHeh, over here in the UK we get the Smart ForTwo iMove (pity its not the Brabus version really), and BMW do an official iPod kit for all their new cars.
Euan said 1550 days ago:
I really like the ipods but have never bought one. It means I have to carry an ipod everywhere as well as a phone…. so I bought the Nokia 6230 (mp3 players) and a 128MB MMC so I’ve got 2 hours of tunes. Easier and better than lugging 2 separate toys around ;)DEfusion said 1550 days ago:
Seth : “Mmm, 40GB iPod, 27 GB remaining… now if only it would understand more music formats…”That’s called an iRiver, 40GB – 22 GB remaining and it supports wma, ogg etc. which is always a good thing.
Euan said 1550 days ago:
Yep, I’ve seen the iRiver’s – nice bit’s a kit and an excellent rival for iPod’s!mathew h. said 1550 days ago:
technically, you can put wma, mpeg, whatever on the ipod when it’s acting as a portable drive.you just can’t play ‘em. ;)
loving my 15g 3g ipod. greatest thing ever. i’ve a playlist called “fourty ounce” where i put my top 40 songs into and play when i get mopey. top tracks in there include: johnny cash, manitoba, ranid, jayhawks, radiohead, yo la tengo, etc. fun stuff.

I’m happy to announce that the collection on my ipod is 18.5 GB (I have a 20 GB iPod)...and that’s the music I like.
Ah, but I love my ipod. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a music player :)

I’ve got a 20GB iPod. I need two more as well as a couple of flash players if I have to lug all my music around with me… Yikes!Patrick said 1550 days ago:
That’s gonna happen to me soon. I have a 4g 40gig iPod, with about a half gig left on it. I’m not concerned, because there’s a lot of music on it I probably don’t listen to, but nonetheless. A sad, sad day.(and speaking of music, everyone needs to check out the new Blonde Redheads album and the Futureheads).
Shawn Rice said 1550 days ago:
I have 50 gig of music with a 30 gig iPod. (I ripped my CD collection. Surprisingly, not a single song was downloaded.) With that much music, you’d think it wouldn’t be such a battle to decide what to put on the iPod and what can be left off. Surely, I don’t need all that! Yet, I struggle with the decision so much that I usually just leave the iPod alone with whatever I put on it when I first got it.Oh, Apple, I beg of thee to make a 60 gig iPod. Er… make that 100 gig just to be sure. Room to grow and all.
iTunes choosing a selection of songs must be somewhat new. I don’t remember having that option before…

There are trade-in programs for just such an emergency.I worry about the fact that my hard drive isn’t big enough to back up my iPod, so if my iPod breaks down, so do I.

I don’t think I’ll be seeing that message for a while – (Almost) all my CD’s ripped and I’ve only filled around 7Gb of my 20Gb iPod.Of course, being on Linux, I don’t have the temptation that is ITMS to help me fill it any quicker.
Ah well. One day maybe. Like if I get a PowerBook…!

Yikes! waddya gonna do now?! Ok… breathe slowly….Heath Weaver said 1549 days ago:
I have the 40gb and I received this message a little while ago, but I knew I didn’t have 40gb of music. It turns out that iTunes always chooses a drive when it connects (I: on Windows for me) and that drive is also set up as a network drive on my computer, so it was mixing the space on my network with the space on the iPod. I had to do the only sensible thing: change my network configuration to accommodate Queen iPod.
Vincent Grouls said 1548 days ago:
I bought an iPod 4G 40 gig a few weeks ago. It already carries 20 gigs, and that is without all of my albums on there.I don’t even start ripping all my CD’s, as they won’t even fit on a 250 gigs drive :o/
I just rip whatever I want to put on there, and make a playlist with my top songs of the moment.
Now to wait for that sweet new iSkin to be available in the UK :-)

You might be interested to know that Listening to music on iPods is basically illegal in Australia or New Zealand due to our copyright laws being ancient and the record companies not wanting them changed. They’re still scrapping about an iTunes service for legal downloads here too.Jon Hicks said 1547 days ago:

I have a small 10gb 3g iPod but I like to restrict the amount of music on it to about 5 or 6gb. That way I can use it as backup device for my documents and preferences if anything goes wrong.BTW has anyone figured out a safe way of partitioning these things yet?

You mean the day has finally come that we have proof you listen to The Beautiful South!? and that you call your iPod hicksdesign iPod… not particularly imaginative. I have a 60Gb iTunes collection and a 20Gb iPod and found that creating a Smart Playlist with limit to 15GB of Most Recently added music works pretty well for me. Of course you do need a custom playlist with Wilco on it, but other than that.Jon Hicks said 1540 days ago:
“You mean the day has finally come that we have proof you listen to The Beautiful South!?” – Its the wife’s!“and that you call your iPod hicksdesign iPod… not particularly imaginative.” – True, but I really couldn’t give a toss.
“Of course you do need a custom playlist with Wilco on it, but other than that.”
There’s plenty of Wilco in that there library, as well as Uncle Tupelo. Thanks – the smart playlist idea is a good one!
I detect a hint of music snob in your comment though Ben. I hope I’m wrong…
