The Two Doctors

Many a Doctor Who fan’s favourite was Tom Baker. Maybe because he stayed in the job the longest, probably more likely that he was simply excellent at the part. However, I think who you grow up with has a lot to do with it, and I grew up with Peter Davison, and he was by far my favourite.

Unashamedly English in style, he was also the first ‘young doctor’ and there hasn’t really been another youthful one until David Tennant. So it’s pant-wettingly exciting that they are appearing together tonight, to say the least. Steven Moffat has written the scene (who consistently turns out the best stories for the last 3 seasons), and Graeme Harper, the veteran Who director is involved too. It may only last 5 minutes in the end, but everything points to good time.

And here it is:

When David Tennant says “You were my Doctor” I get a lump in my throat…

As an unashamed science fiction fan and also Doctor Who fan (they do sometimes coincide) I have to agree that the Peter Davidson role has redefined the doctor without ruining previous incarnations. The scripts should also be applauded for using strong sci-fi themes in dealing with sometimes quite strong issues. If they can keep the scripts, acting and roles up to this standard, this will be remembered as a golden era for the Doctor (probably only be a small minority of DW saddoes such as us however)

Oh, yes! I always enjoyed the multi-Doctor shows. And Davison was an excellent Doctor, certainly in my top three. Here’s hoping they consider a multi-Doctor episode for the series proper. Just imagine what they could do with Tennant, Ecclestone and McGann!

Like you I grew up with Davison and will always remember him sticking his face in that glowing hole in the wall of that church, I warned him not too.
It’s just a shame that it took longer to read your article than it was to watch it, plus the fact I ended up enduring The Spice Girls to get there.
But now I’m fully ready for Voyage of the Damned, roll on Christmas specials.

Don’t worry though: the majority of people who sniff at sci-fi will remember it as that actually pretty good programme that was on at Christmas a lot. That’s the real slap-the-forehead achievement of the new series: actual mainstream success.

“You were my Doctor.”

It felt like someone (Moffat?) was saying that from the heart. And it reminded me that Davison was my Doctor too. :-)

Being born in 1981, I grew up with Sylvester McCoy, who is not often mentioned as being anyone’s favourite, shall we say, but I enjoyed Doctor Who immensely. I also remember being rather attracted to Sophie Aldred (in a pre-pubescent sort-of way)! :)

Becky – that was the part that got me too!

I really enjoyed the short episode – even if the “you were my Doctor” bit was a little cheesy. I remember the Peter Davidson, Colin Baker (shudder) and Sylvester McCoy years, but David Tennant out-Doctor’s them all!

@Barry Bloye – I was never a fan of Sophie Aldred as Ace, but if you’re interested she’s in Melvin and Maureen’s Music-A-Grams on CBeebies at the weekends, 11.15am and 5.15pm (I had to look that up, I didn’t just know!). It’s a kids show from the early 90s and, if you’re still that way inclined, she was wearing leather hot-pants in last week’s episode. My 17-month-old son insisted we watch it.
