the winner was

Back in January, I asked you all for recommendations for a replacement Hicks family digital camera. If anyone is interested to know what happened, I finally plumped for the Canon IXUS 400 – a diminutive beauty.

In the end, I decided to keep my 35mm SLR for anything really creative. The main advantage of the Ixus is that it is so small I can really take it anywhere. Yet the features and quality were amazing, especially the macro facility – much more powerful than I expected. Of course, less than a week after I bought it, the Ixus 500 came out – same price, more pixels. Typical.

Using the simple wonder of Photostack, I’ve thrown together an album of sample images taken by the Missus and me.

Indeed, photostack is pure genius, and good choice for your camera. This is the best choice you could do, this run for more pixels is ridiculous on relatively low-end cameras, given that the size of sensor is still the same, it ends up with a soup of pixels (less and less photons hit the sensor). Nice gallery !

You may want to try Galerie, it's an applications that exports your current iPhoto selection to an html gallery. It has a very powerful/simple template system.

Some nice pics there.

As a result of the posts in your request for suggestions I recently bought a G5 and I haven't been disappointed yet.

Well, Depending on your budget, the canon digital rebel is the greatest camera I have used. The majority of my family are professional photographers and they all agree on the EOS Rebel by canon. It is very versital as well, because of the ability to buy and interchange lenses which cost next to nothing for supreme power. But its all about budget. The Rebel although pricey is worth the money.

Alex - I had considered that, but I don't do enough photography to have justified the expense.

It was a close call between the IXUS and the G5. But as this was to be a 'family' camera, the IXUS won with its portability. I still have my canon EOS 35mm for anything creative, but I'm using the IXUS more at the moment.
