18.04.05 Tiger style for NetNewsWire

Just what the world doesn’t need right now – yet another spotlight style for NetNewsWire! There are many fine ones already available on the interweb, but none of them were quite how I wanted them to be, so here’s mine.

Here’s an overall shot (I just wanted to show you how nice NNW looks with a minimal-no-toolbar approach). Click for a full-size image:

I couldn’t think what else to call it, so for the moment its an egotistical self-named style. Any suggestions?

If you’d like to give it a spin, download the style here: hicksdesign.nnwstyle.zip, and double click the file to install it (thanks to Jason in the comments for pointing out this easy install route). Please Note, you must have the beta of NNW 2 of NNW 2 Lite for this to work. User stylesheets are not supported in earlier versions.

Update. Brent Simmons has asked me to produce a version without the fixed header and footer. Apparently, there is a bug in WebKit where scrolling goes too far when you have fixed elements. So here’s a fluid version with no fixed elements:

You have way too many spare time if you can keep up with all those blogs ;)

Anyway, nice one!

Nice. Very nice.

Q: Why is 43 Folders under design blogs?

Thats just the problem Dennis – I’d don’t have enough time!

Sweet. Newsfire was my main choice as an RSS reader. Your little side project with NNW makes me think twice about NF.

Marten – I know, but it doesn’t fit into any other categories

*thinks – maybe I should’ve blurred out the feeds….

You can also just doubleclick the .nnwstyle file after unzipping… Much easier than navigating to ~/Library/etcetera…

Seems that NNW styles also work in PulpFiction, too. Nice:

I love it, thanks Jon!

On most NNW styles, you must click on the post title to read it. In yours, the whole header works as a link. It’s much more comfortable that way. The mousover looks nice, too.

Just a minor complaint: long post titles don’t wrap, they just go on until the window ends.

17 feeds and you’re only down to Adactio?!
I thought I had a lot with 32 feeds… and that’s including the TXP/TXD forums!

You never cease to amaze me.

I’ve been using the 3 panel interface without the toolbar for a while now. For such a great program (with a really nice application icon) the default toolbar icons look awful.

Any suggestions on why I’m not getting the blue image “headerstrip.png” to show up behind the post title? I followed the install directions.

Jon Hicks said 1756 days ago:

Hans – I have 241 feeds in all! And no, I don’t get the chance to read them all, all of the time. However, I can’t unsubscribe for fear of missing out on something.

Josh – I am, but it runs so slow. NNW is really snappy, despite its features.

Colin – thats odd. Its seems to be working OK for everyone else?

Jon, I upgraded and it seemed to fix my problem.

Jon,

I didn’t know that NewsFire had an issue with responsiveness. Good to know. Thanks for the great NNW theme. This one replaced my other “Tiger” themes. ;)

Not sure why, I’m no expert at this stuff what-so-ever, but I’m having the same issue as one or two others—the original style works while the fluid one doesn’t.

Kyle said 1756 days ago:

Nice work. This one feels more “Tigerey” than the other Tiger-like themes I’ve used. Now if only someone would develop a skin for the rest of NNW, it might finally “feel” as good as NewsFire (which is more playful, but less…workable?).

My apologies – I’ve made silly arse mistakes with the files I’ve uploaded. Please re-download and everything should be fine

It’s not so much a bug in Safari as more of a working as it should.

Fixed elements are outside of the normal page flow and can overlap anything on the page. When you scroll the page fixed items at the bottom will tend to cover up the bottom text unless ample padding or margin is added to the text. The padding offers a buffer to avoid being under a fixed eleemnts at the bottom.

I’m new to the RSS reader movement. Because of my newness I’m having a hard time figuring out where to place the Tiger style so that it works. I tried double clicking to install, but I end up with an unzipped folder. Help please.

Ok, I love this new style, but it drives me nuts. The header doesn’t wrap the headline at all. I wish I could find a lovely spotlight style that wraps the title rather than just letting it clip off.

here’s what I’m talking about

p.s. I’m looking forward to your hacking rc3 to do your groovy comments.

Thanks Jon. I hadn’t downloaded the beta yet, and so far I’m quite pleased. I’ve been a NewsFire user since I started with my Mac, but I think this might get me to switch. At least back and forth every now and then. Nice work as always.

Hey Jon, I modified your style to include a little nugget of code to filter out the google rss ads I’ve been seeing. I’ll paste it in. See my blog for a little hat tip to you I put in there w/ the full post about the code…
