13.12.05 Time to redesign the logo methinks

Whether its leaf logos, logos that have similar 3 shape patterns or both, I’m starting to think its time to redesign. I’m not crying ‘copy cats’ here by the way, I’m just starting to feel run of the mill:

Similiar Logos

I think I’ve taken the leaf theme as far as I can – its time for a rethink. A rethink that I’ll do in all that spare time of course ;o)

What would be cool, would be like having an elipse – maybe at a slight angle surrounding part of ‘hicksdesign’. Yeah, that would be so cool and original and so cool and…

Does Textile have any tags for sarcasm?

I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s noticed the excess of leaves on the net lately. There’s also Lussumo Vanilla’s logo.

You forgot getvanilla.com or lista.cz ;)

Thanks chaps – i’ve updated the main image. I knew about Vanilla, but hadn’t come across Lista

Yeah, forget leaves and maybe concentrate on fruit, or conkers. Don’t see many conkers in logos.

You should finally sit down and make that web logo generator we have been talking about. There will be three panes, one with elements (fire, water, etc), one with animals, and one with a variety of globes and spheres. Then you can just drag and drop one of each to create your new logo. Viola!!

Good luck Jon ;D

Okay John, I got it.

See, you take this leaf… then you add a fox. Make it go up a ladder… I take it all back. Just add a swoosh. Retro web logos are coming back, it’ll be the latest craze all over again! (The concept of PlanetHicks though, yipe)

Be interesting to see what you cook up in your free time.

You could do a load of work around say 5 pointed stars and then send them to me for an opinion… After that I’d go and try something else and forget you ever sent them to me :)

Maybe carry along the lines of elements? You’ve done leaves, now something else elemental (NOT FIRE!! that’s been overdone too)

Brings up another interesting point – do all logos need marks?

It is kinda strange how leaves just seemed to spread throughout design…ooh, i know! Maybe you could try a 3d ball!

Kevin Tamura said 1519 days ago:

@ JSM: Would there be a random button to create truely unique logos. Just thing of the potential…

@ John Hicks: Wow, I didn’t know there were so many leaves used for logos. I too think the wedge of cheese would be a good option. You could even change it every month to correspond with your favorite cheese at the time.

Some other themes to try that other design firms will continue to avoid:

Meat hooks/slaughter house/blood

Plaid and/or Camouflage

Terrorism

Lingerie

Unicorns and rainbows

Poo poo

Just some ideas to get the juices flowing…

Leaves are TOTALLY overused! But there is also another fad this is becoming used a lot, and getting a little old, that is the iChat reflection idea. I used it at my site :(

I am starting to see the reflection everywhere!!

@JSM –

We had a running joke at my last employer where we could create a business name generator for our area.

First column would be a name – geographic (mountain ranges, rivers, etc.) or animal name.

Second column would be more general type of geographic element (mountain, river, creek, etc.) and the third column would be the type of business.

You end up with things like Bridger Mountain Log Homes (an actual client of ours at one time) or Beaver Creek Accounting.

We also intended on creating a selection of elk related clipart, since people around here seem to be so into elk that they randomly place elk graphics in their logos and such.

In fact, Bridger Steel has two elk outlines on their garage door with their logo. They sell nothing that has anything to do with elk, they just added the elk later on because they wanted to.

As far as the leaf thing, Jon. You created the replacement for the swoosh. Now you have to show us what other directions to go in. :)

From an expert:

The hicksdesign log and band is also frizzilingy with brand identity gone astray. British designer John Hick shouldn’t use leaves, espeically not with his logo on the side as it is, it suggests to the client subconscious that he is either using marijuana and so can’t stand up straight, or, being British that he is sat on his backside all day drinking the leaf tea brew, which is the favourite amongst us Brits. Would you want to hire a tea drinker who can’t stand up because he smokes marijuana all day? I thought not.

The one thing your logo has that all those other logos don’t have is the // element, which we all have come to associate with the URL system. It fuses the organice with the synthetic very elegantly, which seems to be more than I can say about the other logos.
